The dangers of “homemade orthodontics”
- The future of orthodontics? For some time now, we have been able to find videos on YouTube and other websites showing how to do self-orthodontics, “home orthodontics”, “remote orthodontics” or “do-it-yourself orthodontics” (in English).
- These “auto-ortho” techniques are mainly used to close a diastema or small gaps between the anterior teeth, but there are several variations. These people use different kinds of elastics that they stretch and place on either side of the teeth to provide a continuous force that will move the teeth.
- Although the idea behind this approach may seem logical, as it uses the very principles of dental movement in orthodontics, the way in which these elastics are recommended can be very dangerous and damaging to teeth and periodontium.
