What is a dental specialty?Modern dentistry includes several areas of intervention. Through their academic and clinical training, general dentists receive basic knowledge in all aspects of dentistry and can, in theory, provide services and treatments in all these areas. However, some interventions are more complex and require specific expertise and experience. This is why there are specialized fields in dentistry, as in medicine, where practitioners who have first received training in general dentistry, limit their practice to a particular field. These dentists who have received additional training in a particular field, completed a recognized graduate program and limited their practice to that field are “dental specialists“. These specialists respond to a need by treating, among other things, the most complex cases in their respective specialties that general dentists prefer not to treat. |
