IMPORTANT: Aimed at the general public, the Bücco Guide is a general educational guide. Its content presents some of the most common dental practices. However, there are many approaches and philosophies in dentistry and your dentist / specialist will be able to advise you on what he believes to be the most appropriate for your oral health. Do not hesitate to consult a dentist / specialist for more information.
The initial assessment
During the initial assessment, if nothing major or abnormal requiring intervention is detected, the child will be placed under “observation” and evaluated again at regular intervals of 12 to 18 months to monitor the development of his teeth. Appropriate recommendations will be made in due course during subsequent visits. In patients with mixed dentition, i.e. those who still have temporary teeth and permanent teeth in the mouth, nature should be allowed to act between each examination and procedure (if necessary) during the supervision of the eruption of the teeth. It is therefore usually sufficient to reassess the development of the teeth only every ± 12 months. There is no benefit in seeing patients more frequently unless a particular condition warrants it.
Why take a panoramic x-ray?
The orthodontist may recommend taking a panoramic x-ray for: have an overview of the dentition under development; monitor the development and eruption of the teeth; Ensure that all teeth are present and developing normally; assess the direction of tooth eruption and the space available for the teeth to exit the mouth; to anticipate and minimize the occurrence of certain problems.
